Polarization Patterns in Pulsar Radio Emission
A variety of intriguing polarization patterns are created when polarization observations of the single pulses from radio pulsars are displayed in a twodimensional projection of the Poincaré sphere. In many pulsars, the projections produce two clusters of data points that reside at antipodal points on the sphere. The clusters are formed by fluctuations in polarization amplitude that are parallel...
متن کاملAre There Real Orthogonal Polarization Modes in Pulsar Radio Emission?
The Orthogonal Polarization Modes (OPM) have been reported observationally (see e.g. [1]) and accepted widely by pulsar researchers (see e.g. [2,3]). However, no acceptable theory can show the origin of the OPM, which becomes a mystery in pulsar research field. Here a possible way to solve this mystery is presented. We ask a question: Does there exist any real so-called OPM in pulsar radiation?...
متن کاملA transition from linear to circular polarization in pulsar radio emission
At present three pulsars are known which clearly show a strongly increasing degree of circular polarization with frequency. As this is accompanied by a smooth decrease of linear polarization, we investigate, if this observation can be explained through a propagation mode transition from linear to circular polarization. Using a previously published model we find that the rate of change of the po...
متن کاملPulsar spectra of radio emission
We have collected pulsar flux density observations and compiled spectra of 281 objects. The database of Lorimer et al. (1995) has been extended to frequencies higher than 1.4 GHz and lower than 300 MHz. Our results show that above 100 MHz the spectra of the majority of pulsars can be described by a simple power law with average value of spectral index < α >= −1.8 ± 0.2. A rigorous analysis of s...
متن کاملDepolarization of Pulsar Radio Emission.
We show that intensity-dependent depolarization of single pulses may be due to the nonlinear decay of the "upper" ordinary (O) mode into an unpolarized extraordinary mode and a backward-propagating wave. The decay occurs in the innermost parts of the pulsar magnetosphere for obliquely propagating O waves.
